Job Searching Post Redundancy
|
My job is being outsourced in 12 months and I am being made redundant from my firm after 10 years of service, which is fine. What I need to get my head around is job searching, because the only moves I've made in the last 10 years have been internal. I'm fine with interviews, but the actual searching beforehand is a sport I'd long since stopped playing and so I turn to the oracle of WHO for some wisdom. I know some of you have been in a similar position in the past and consulting your experience might give me the leg up I'm after.
And yes, before the condescension begins, they're now outsourcing burger flippers and shelf stacking roles as well.

I dont envy you mate i was made redundant in December i must have applied for over 100 jobs in either driving, post room/facilities, wharehousing and security. I think i got about 7or 8 replies and only about 3 job offers probably my age i am 54 now had something to do with it. Started working on May 2nd. Make sure your cv is up to date and sign up to as many job sites as you can. Be warned you will get a load of job vancancies that wont be relvant to you though and good luck.

Have a think about what you want/can do and set up a job search profile on a couple of the job aggregators (JobServe, JobSearch & the like). This will give you a feel for what's about and what the pay rates are.
Do it now and give yourself time to tweak your search requirements down to what YOU want to do.
Be prepared to go temp/freelance rather then wait for that "perfect" permanent role, if you have a cash-flow issue (like a mortgage/HP deal).
If you can work abroad, it's a fucking big oyster - and we're not talking Boris Bikes here...

as you are being made redundant would should - as Greenie mentioned - be accommodated with regards to time off
They (the company letting you go) should also support you in terms of writing your CV etc.
And possibly (we were offered this recently) training courses if you need to upskill/reskill
good luck

Start on your CV, but don't leave it for another day, get it done ASAP If there are redundancies, then, from memory, you are allowed time off for job interviews etc. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on this. sign up with agencies in your line of work. Connections within your trade, put the word out. LinkedIn is good for making connections. Job Centre website, Indeed, Monster etc etc, you can upload your CV (be careful to take out your address etc) anyone can see your details.

I'm on a secondment at the moment from my parent team and I'll be around for a fair few months after everyone else has been made redundant. The manager of the team really likes me and the way I work, but there's no perm role at the end of it.
Adds to my experience in my field, so hopefully all's well that ends well.

Plus the politics within is pretty horrendous and I've never been good at 'playing the game.'
You and me both mate.

No worries mate. 12 months is a long time and I can look internally and I have people interested internally, but 10 years is a good chance to move on. Plus the politics within is pretty horrendous and I've never been good at 'playing the game.'

Start looking now.
Unless you're going to get a really big pay off, don't stay until the end, take a job you want/like now.
Statutory redundancy will be just under £5k , in your case. Of course your employers can give you what they like above that.
Also, when asked "why do you want this job?" You can say career progression/always wanted to work here etc, rather than "I'm on the dole"
Much as I hate them, registering with recruitment consultants, in your field, will be a help.
Are their trade magazines for your industry? Often find job adverts in them.

I also noticed that a lot of companies post jobs on there so you don't have to go through an agency , so it is worth checking all the jobs available on there
